All Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) can be charged using external methods—such as plugging the vehicle in at home or at a public charging station. These vehicles can also be partially recharged while driving by using on-board regenerative braking technology.
There are three external plug-in charging levels that are common for electric vehicles worldwide. Each level is defined by the amount of voltage, which directly correlates to the speed or quickness of the charging session. Level 1 Home Charging (120-volt) takes the most time to reach a full charge, followed by Level 2 Home and Commercial Charging (240-volt), and finally Fast or Public Charging (400-volt).
Depending on the level of charging that you are looking for, installation by a certified technician may be required.
The simplest charging method, Level 1 Charging requires a consumer to plug their vehicle into a conventional 120-volt, grounded household outlet. Most EVs/PHEVs come with a portable Level 1 cord, so no additional charging equipment is required.
While this method is simple, it also takes the longest time to charge. Level 1 Charging typically provides 5 to 8 KM of electric charge for every hour of charging. Charging overnight can easily meet most driving needs.
Level 2 Charging uses a 240-volt electrical service (a good example is a clothes dryer outlet). EV owners can choose to have a 240-volt connection installed at their home by a qualified technician. While this is an added step and expense, it results in much faster charging times at approximately 40 KM of range per 1 hour of charging.
Direct-current (DC) fast charging equipment enables rapid charging at public charging stations. There are three types of DC fast charging systems: AE Combined Charging System (CCS), CHAdeMO and Tesla. What system your vehicle requires for charging is based on the type of charging port on your vehicle. Most BEVs will accommodate a CSS connector.
